5 Media Interview Tips to Help You Get More Press and Deliver Confident, Compelling Soundbites

Learn how to prepare for media interviews with 5 expert tips that help you pitch smarter, respond faster, and deliver confident, newsworthy soundbites.

  1. Want more media coverage? What’s a national issue or problem in the news that you help solve? Do you serve refugees? Are you helping senior citizens file tax returns? Pitch that–journalists are always looking to “localize” national stories in their communities.

  2. Do your research: Got a media interview coming up? A great way to prep is to read/listen/watch what the journalist has done recently. Get a sense of their style.

  3. Understand Deadlines: Journalists think in hours, not days. They might start on a story at 10 a.m. that has to be finished by 3 p.m. Be responsive. Rearrange your calendar. Always ask, “What’s your deadline?” and then do your best to get them the information or interview they need by that time.

  4. Don’t Ask A Reporter to Email You Questions: The best stories have real people, being real experts, saying real words that an audience can understand and connect with. You’ll sound more conversational and more engaging if you prepare well and actually talk to a reporter.

  5. Be Helpful: Offer other sources of information. Offer to meet a reporter somewhere they can get good photos or video.

Bonus: Stay Ready. Keep a jacket on your door and some lipstick in your bag. Being ready and responsive sets you apart as an expert source.
